Prof Chakraborty’s group uses precision spectroscopy techniques using near-infrared and mid-infrared tunable diode lasers to develop high-sensitivity gas sensing platforms for industrial safety and ambient air quality monitoring that are both essential components of sustainable development. The group uses state-of-the-art wavelength modulation spectroscopy techniques and sophisticated data processing algorithms for accurate recovery of the mole fraction of a variety of gases with detection sensitivities down to the low parts per billion. We also focus on the engineering aspects of the design to build robust, lightweight and field-deployable systems for automated and long-term measurements in various parts of the city. This technology is readily adaptable to detect a large number of atmospheric pollutants and has therefore emerged as the preferred technique for highly reliable measurements.
