Sustainable Campus

The IIT Gandhinagar campus is the first campus in India to receive the 5 star GRIHA LD rating for its eco-friendly and sustainable design. The IITGN campus is a “living laboratory” on sustainability.

Sustainable Campus Initiatives

Passive Cooling Technologies

In student dining hall and classroom buildings based on evaporative downdraft cooling, night-purge based system, forced evaporative cooling.

Solar Photovoltaic Systems

The total installed capacity of 500 kWp of which around 190 kWp at academic buildings roof, 120 kWp at student hostels roof and 190 kWp of solar carport.

Rooftop Rainwater Harvesting

Jal Mandaps, underground tanks, collect rainwater from rooftops for reuse for horticulture and toilets.

Sewage Treatment Plant and Water Recycling

A three-stage fully-natural (chemical-free) sewage treatment plant recycles water to maintain green cover in the campus. Since 2015, IITGN has saved nearly 3 lakh litres of water daily.

Solid Waste Management and Biogas Reactor

IITGN’s solid waste management system enables at-source recycling of bio-degradable materials and the transfer of 1200 kilos of recyclable waste (paper, plastic, packaging materials, PET bottles) to regional commercial recycling centres. A 1-ton biogas generator, built in collaboration with BARC, generates manure and electricity from food and organic waste.
